Lotus Tea: Composition, Characteristics, and Benefits

Lotus tea (trà sen in Vietnamese) is one of the most popular culinary specialties in Vietnam, made primarily with flowers harvested from the West Lake, the largest body of water in the capital. The preparation of “trà sen” is considered an art, especially during traditional tea ceremonies.

The lotus flower is regarded as one of the sacred plants in Asia, particularly in India, Vietnam, and China. For centuries, the flower and its stamens have been used in traditional medicine. The lotus is also frequently featured in art, literature, and religion. It is considered a symbol of purity, beauty, renewal, and wisdom.

Its benefits are numerous:

Anti-inflammatory properties
Antioxidant effects
Diuretic properties
Calming properties
Anti-aging properties

To create our Lotus Tea, we selected a black tea from Yunnan.

Black tea combined with fresh or dried white lotus flowers is known for its medicinal properties.

    What Makes Yunnan Tea Special?
This black tea, originating from southern China, comes from the Yunnan region, as its name indicates. Yunnan produces mostly beautiful black teas that have become famous worldwide.

The uniqueness of this tea lies in its large leaves adorned with numerous Golden Tips — a true marvel full of character.

Yunnan is considered the birthplace of tea in the world. On the highlands, the warm and humid climate is highly favorable for cultivating “grand cru” Camellia sinensis.

This tea produces a bright red liquor with vivid colors. Long on the palate, it is both smooth and full-bodied, with floral and slightly sweet notes.

    When to Drink Lotus Tea?
This robust and powerful tea, lightly scented with lotus flower, is ideal for enjoying in the morning, alongside breakfast. It allows you to benefit from its caffeine throughout the day while savoring its pleasantly floral and fragrant taste.

How to Prepare Lotus Tea: Our Advice
How should you brew this black tea to fully release its aromas? The process is simple:

We recommend steeping it for 3 minutes in water heated between 85°C and 90°C. Once infused, it develops a caramel color, more or less dark depending on infusion time.

But remember, there is no single method — the secret to a good tea is to enjoy it the way you like. You can shorten the infusion for a lighter taste or extend it for a stronger, more intense result. Also, check out our flavored teas for more variety.

If you wish to enjoy it caffeine-free (as an herbal infusion), you can easily decaffeinate your Lotus Tea to drink it in the evening.
