What are the benefits of green mate?
Do you know mate? This drink from South America is very much in the news at the moment!
And for good reason, mate is a concentrate of benefits!
First of all, mate is an excellent stimulant: like tea, it delivers a certain diffuse energy, on the long term. We explain that a little further down.
Mate is also very rich in antioxidants, it contains more polyphenols than tea!
Moreover, several studies have shown that mate is also excellent for the recovery after a physical effort. By consuming mate, the rate of recovery would be increased by 9% over 24 hours after a muscular training.
It also contains anti-inflammatory properties that are ideal for relieving sore muscles after exercise! Besides, mate is also popular because it is known to be consumed by many high level soccer players. So, convinced?
What is green mate?
Native to South America, mate is a drink made from the leaves of the Yerba Mate or Ilex Paraguariensi.
This famous shrub can measure up to 20 m high and grows only in the border regions between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Moreover these 3 countries boast of its invention. In South America mate is a convivial drink, which symbolizes sharing, moments of joy and friendship.
Originally, mate was consumed by the Guaraníes, an Amerindian people originating mainly from Paraguay.
For them, the mate leaves were a gift from the gods, they used them as money or as an offering and of course for their consumption.
Traditionally mate was prepared as an infusion and was eaten in a kind of squash or the leaves were chewed directly. The difference between traditional mate and green mate is in the maturing process. Traditional mate is matured, i.e. it is stored for several months so that its aromas intensify.
The green mate is not matured, which makes it a little less strong in taste. This mate is more appreciated in Europe for example!
And yes, the traditional maté consumed in South America has a certain bitterness, the green maté is softer and more adapted to the taste of Europeans!
If you have never drunk mate before, we recommend this green tonic mate to start with. You can also start with our Maté Citron for a fresh and energizing flavour.
Does mate prevent from sleeping?
Mate contains caffeine, but less than coffee. Thus it allows you to enjoy the stimulating effects while avoiding undesirable effects such as the famous "tiredness" a few hours after consumption.
But mate also contains other stimulants such as theobromine, which stimulates the nervous system, and theophylline, the main active molecule in tea leaves.
Like tea, mate delivers a diffuse energy, on the long term without "energy peak".
Thus we recommend you to consume mate in the morning, to benefit from all its effects. On the other hand, it should be avoided in the evening, as it may impact your sleep.
What is the difference between tea and mate?
First of all, both are not from the same plant! Tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant mainly cultivated in Asia, and mate comes from the Ilex Paraguariensi plant which grows in South America.
The mate will give you a greater sense of energy!
More importantly, both are great for your health! So whether you're Team Tea or Team Mate (or both) enjoy your favorite drink!
They are conquered !
