Where does Oolong tea come from?
Do you know Oolong tea? This black tea from China is very popular in Asia and is a must-have for tea lovers!
If Taiwan has made its specialty it is also produced in China in the regions of Fujian, Guangdong.
This tea also has a great history. According to the legend, during the Quing dynasty, a Fujian tea farmer saw a deer while he was picking his tea. The man then decided to go hunting for the deer, leaving his harvest behind. He resumed the processing of his tea the next day, but already the leaves had partially oxidized and were giving off new and surprising aromas. It is said that Oolong tea is halfway between green and black tea. It is also called blue tea or green tea.
He then started tasting this new beverage and discovered this liquor with a very soft flavor, with almost sweet notes and without bitterness. This man who was nicknamed "Oolong" had just discovered this delicious tea that we enjoy today.
Of course, this remains a legend and it is up to you to believe it. This is also the magic of tea!
But how did this tea come to Taiwan?
It seems that in the early 1800s, a tea merchant from Fujian traveled to Taiwan to bring Camellia Sinensis seeds to see if the conditions were right to grow them. This experiment proved to be very successful. Since then, tea production in Taiwan has become widespread.
During the first half of the 19th century, most of the tea was sent back to Fujian for processing.
From about 1870, a British man brought tea masters from Fujian to set up tea processing directly in Taipei. This was a success and the following year 127 tons of tea produced in Taiwan (called Formosa tea) were shipped to the United States. Today Oolong tea is the most exported type of tea from Taiwan.
When should I drink Oolong tea?
Grand Oolong is ideal in the morning. It is a non-bitter liquor and perfect for a smooth breakfast.
